What is a smart farm?

There is a lot of hype about smart farming, Agtech and how the ‘Internet of Things’, also known as IoT, will disrupt agricultural industries. But why is it important to make a farm smarter and what does it actually mean to you?

Uses technology to increase productivity and reduce costs utilising the farm’s resources and assets. This process is referred to as Agtech which uses IoT capabilities.

Can be anything – smartphones, headphones, lamps, washing machines, tractors, gates, weather stations, water tank sensors, farm implements… the list is endless.

Is quickly becoming one of the world’s most valuable resources. The key is to collect, store and analyse data – consistently and regularly – to create insights which highlight patterns and anomalies.

Allow informed decisions which result in better productivity and greater profitability and sustainability.

Using sensors as one of the building blocks, is the connection of devices which enables them to ‘talk’ to each other. The result is the collection of data and the ability to automate activities and actions. The current thinking is that there will be over 26 billion connected devices by 2020.
